      FM is Crap - How Do You Cope?

      February 13th, 2008 | by daniel | General

      This is a universal truth: FM radio stations suck. Can’t stand hip hop. ‘Mix’ stations are anything but. They don’t know ‘Jack’. I don’t want them to ‘Kiss’ me. Oldies? Puhleeez. I’m not even feeling the Christian ‘Love’ (do they know that other Christian artists exist other than the Newsboys and Rich Mullins?). Too many commercials.

      Now since filling my personal (iTunes) library costs time or money depending where you get music, and I’m too frugal to sign up for XM or Sirius, I turn to internet radio.

      I like to listen to music while working and since I spend all day at a desk that’s not in Soviet Russia (read: not behind a corporate firewall - sorry Melia) I have my pick of internet radio stations, but I usually stick to one of the following (playable through iTunes or Windows Media Player):

      1. di.fm - One of the older internet radio stations, I’ve been listening to di.fm since 1999. I love “Funky House” and “Vocal Trance.” Perfect for when you need to knock out that last bit of code and need a good beat to inspire you.

      2. Electra Radio - I found this station in the iTunes listing and it’s my first choice when looking for something to listen to. The choice of music is great and is a very good fit to my taste. There are ads, but they are in French so they are easy to ignore. They mix current hits with older pop hits.

      3. Frequence Metz - Not sure yet why I keep choosing French stations, but here’s another one. I listen to the “Rock and British” station and I frequently find myself going to the player to find out the name of the artist for a song that I like and have never heard before.

      So does anyone have any music source suggestions, internet or other?

        To be honest- I have been rolling on complete silence and it’s great. Years ago when my car radio went out- I went a year without a radio- so it really doesn’t bother me. I can take it or leave it. Sorry I am not much help.

        One word,…..Ipod. Oh, yes, with a transmitter. Of course, keeping inline with the theme, the transmitter connects with the FM station.
        2k songs and counting. Anything from Kylie Ann Minogue and any song with a intense beat in the morning. That and 3 cups of coffee in my travel mug, and we take on the infamous Blanco corridor in the a.m. Four miles of bumper to bumper and any song I choose. Ah yes, Jeremy Camp and James Brown in this electronic mini storehouse.

        I couldn’t believe that San Antonio FM radio could get any worse… until we were back for the holidays. Good grief, has every single channel been taken over by ClearChannel?

        My recommendation — move to Austin if you want good FM radio.

      4. Kara Says:

        Yeah, between FM and the RIAA, I think you are screwed. I listen to Electra Radio too, but even it gets a little old - you know, lots of candy pop bands that cater to sixteen year old girls. :)

        I use my iPod for about 8-10 hours every day. It is my close companion.

        @lynn

        i think you mentioned this in small group way back.  how do you do it?  do you sing to yourself?!?!?!?

        @kara

        haven’t we had the “16-year old girl demographic” conversation?

        don’t judge me :)

      6. Kara Says:

        Yeah, I threw that in there because I like to beat dead horses. I had a friend from China that had only been in the states for a few months, and one time I said “beating a dead horse” and she looked at me like I was an insane person. I had fun teaching her about idioms, but then she wouldn’t always use them appropriately. But I was amused.

        It’s the alternative Christian station. I only listen on-line as the closest city that has it is San Angelo.

        It’s pretty fantastic.

      8. melia Says:

        nothing to do with music, but sportsfans should tune to AM 1250 at 11 for “Bringin It” with Paul Alexander and my buddy Russ Huff (A - you met him at Ruta Maya that night)

        oh, and thanks for rubbing in the iron curtain, mr. worksfromhome. i didn’t do much internet radio, anyway…. but i find myself missing tony bruno and “the jungle”

      9. JD Says:

        Yes, FM does suck so its Sirius sat. radio for me using my portable Stiletto 2…

        I completely love satelite radio, espcecially when on the road. When that gets old, I switch over to mp3z stored on the Stiletto 2 — 6GB (nice). In fact, when my XM subscription runs out on my truck, I will have to talk to Ian about installing Sirius.

      10. Lynn Says:

        No no singing to myself–I just enjoy the silence and listen to my thoughts. I think it provides clarity. Sometimes when the music is playing you can’t really hear yourself think. Don’t get me wrong I do listen to the radio, but I can roll with silence as well.

      11. Dan Sr aka Dad, Pappas Says:

        You targeted Mix and Jack, how did you miss, Kris Winston and Alyce Ian on Y100 with the original weird stories in the morning? Kris always has the weird story and follows with the dramatic re-enactment. These two must fall under your radar!!
