I lost my vote after picking ‘Into the Wild’ in our netflix queue. We watched it last night and we didn’t agree with anything in the movie. I knew it was a story of guy going to the Alaskan wilderness and his journey along the way, but it moved far slower than I imagined it would. The protagonist ‘Alex Supertramp’ said he had ideals, but ultimately the movie is about rebellion, stubbornness and unforgiveness. He gives a substantial sum of money to a charity and burns money, but he should have spent it on some counseling.
It was nice seeing Jena Malone in the movie, but I wish we could have seen more of her character. I have liked her as an actress ever since I saw her in ‘Saved.’ Vince Vaughn is in the movie and he plays the usual laid back character he always plays. Even with the good acting, this Sean Penn project could not be saved from the selfishness of the main character. The movie gets a thumbs down from us.

Am I getting old? During the movie I kept thinking that I can understand someone wanting to go find themselves and experience the world, but his decisions were just poorly planned and executed. And the whole “fight society and ‘the man’” has been done way better (i.e. Undercover Brother).
Plus, just because he can quote some dead authors doesn’t make him some icon of counter culture brilliance. His motivations were purely from selfishness (i’m gonna leave and not tell you where i’m going and you can’t do anything about it), pride (i don’t need you’re stupid government permit), and rebellion (i don’t want your new car and all of the baggage that comes along with it).
Seriously dude, save some time (and apparently your life) and get some counseling.

What about the Eddie Vedder soundtrack? I have heard great things about that.

Yeah, the sounds track was pretty good. You could definitely tell it was Eddie. It didn’t wow me like other soundtracks.

The book is better. I just read it…but I still thought he was pretty nuts and it wasn’t my favorite.

I liked the movie for all of its artistic value…great camera work, great acting (great soundtrack). I think it’s up to personal opinion whether you agree or disagree with the actions/motivation of the story’s protagonist. The movie is just telling the story, which I think it does well. I thought it was meant to be a slow-paced, intense film, as it chronicals one (perhaps misguided) man’s personal journey.
…but I wouldn’t go so far as to call it “entertaining”.
