2012 Goals Update 2

We’re halfway through 2012 and its time to check up on our goals for the year.

Daniel’s Goals

Spiritual

Daily Prayer Reading Times - I’ve gotten in a good groove of having a time of prayer and devotionals right when I get to work while my computer is turning on.  Normally Amanda and I have just prayed together before I left the house and It’s a quick 15-20 minutes where I can read the word, (lately I have also been reading My Utmost For His Highest), pray for my family and business, and focus for the day.

This month Pastor Sean is going through the book of James and I’ll be reading that book specifically.

Physical

Lose 100 lbs by 12/31/2012 - I reset this goal from 50lbs to 100lbs after a stellar few months earlier in the year.  The past two months have been a discouragingly flat plateau of zero weight loss.  I’ve been stuck at 245 lbs. or 30 lbs lost.  Per a friend’s suggestion I fasted for 24 hours this past Saturday for a “reset” and am getting back to counting calories, and increasing my weight workouts to 3x per week.  I’m also making more of a shift to doing the “Slow Carb” diet from The 4-Hour Body.  It is a simple premise and has been easy for me to incorporate in my plan.  It also helps that I enjoy eating nothing but beans :)

Status: Needs work.

Social

Start a guys book club - This started off well enough.  Then we hit a month where I realized my time and attention was split between too many things and my work billable hours were suffering and as a direct result our bottom line.  So since the participation in the book club had been lackluster I decided to cancel it.  I still am interested in reading and discussing books with friends so might restart later or I might join an online book discussion group that I don’t have to do the organizing, recruiting and management.  An example is Sword and Laser.

Status: Cancelled

Start a web developer meeting - Similarly to the book club, the SAWPG meetup that I had been co-organizer meetup fell on the chopping block when I needed to focus more attention at billable hours and making money.  Josh is still running the group, and I hope to get back to participating once I have more free time.

Status: Postponed

Financial

Debt Free (except mortgage) by 12/31/2012 - We are still working on the baby steps.  We are still facilitating Financial Peace University at River City CC and the current class has provided a lot of motivation and encouragement for the process.  Based on the “Dumping Debt” lesson we went through our house and found even more stuff to sell.  Through Craigslist and a garage sale we made $1,100 off of selling stuff we already had.  Unfortunately that amount got eaten up by some car repairs we needed.  Thankfully we haven’t had any more medical expenses and we won a scholarship for hearing aids that saved us from having to spend $4,000!

So although the needle hasn’t moved on our total debt, we feel we’re making good decisions and happy for the status quo for now.

Status: Needs focus

Family

Quality Time with Kids - Doing great on this.  I’ve had fun with the kids playing music, going to festivals, and taking them swimming.

Status: On Track

Blog More/Keep Record of Life - Doing good on this one.  I need to make an effort to take more video of the kids though.  Roman’s speech is getting better and better every day and he will soon be out of the cute-toddler-speech phase.  I need more video to remember how he talks now.  Same with Zander.

Intellectual

Read 12 Books by 12/31/2012 - Still doing good on this.  Should be through 12 by August/September.

Status: On Track

Fluent/Conversant in Spanish by 12/31/2012 - So Rosetta Stone isn’t really advanced enough for me.  It’s slow progress and I loose focus quickly.  I’d really like to find a conversation partner or tutor that can come to the house so Amanda, the kids and I can learn together.

Status: Needs Focus

Write 2 blog posts per month in 2012 - Doing good with this one.  One change I’ve made is adding the Editorial Calendar Plugin for the 3 blogs I write on.  This presents a visual of where posts are scheduled and what drafts need to be completed.  We’ll see how this one goes.

Career

50%/50% split of revenue between services and products by 12/31/2012 - So funny enough I’m now 100% products income / 0% services income.  Part of this turn was that I had been completing projects and not taking on new work and the other part is the one agency I had been doing work for stopped issuing me work.  So Amanda and I prayed and we agree that it was a good time to go all-in on the products ideas I have.  Thankfully the products that I have already shipped are selling well and with no client work this has freed up my time to work on shipping more products.

Status: Complete!

Relaunch Grow Development - This is done and the Word Press plugins I authored are listed.  I’m now working on shipping a few Magento modules.

Status: Complete!

Start New Company - With the focus on relaunching Grow and having more modules built this launch has slipped to Q2-Q3.
