Only "survival Hungarian" - the basics for restaurants, train stations, stores, theatres, etc. Even if we tried to speak HU, most folks would speak English back to us (they'd kinda roll their eyes as if to say, "I'll make it easy on you.") Plus we sure needed to be able to read a lot of basic words in order to work well in our respective schools. We were ESL teachers in public high schools. It was an awesome experience.

We say "Kosonom Szepen, Viszontlatasra" all the time to e/o - (thank you very much, goodbye) - which was always heard in stores.

I was there in July 2001, so right before you got there, but while the Mr. was there.

Budapest is a great town. I'd love to spend some more time there. We spent most of our time in Gyor and went to Vienna also.

Did you pick up any Hungarian? I swear that's the most difficult language I've encountered.

Hey Daniel, when did you go to Hungary? I lived there from 02-03, and my hubby lived there from 00-03 (both of us in Budapest) - it was great scrolling through your pics! Ah, we miss it.
