The Sky Is Not Fallling
“Hi, I’m Chicken Little, and I’m here selling helmets.”
~ President Bush
I know, he didn’t actually say that, but it might as well have been what was on his tele-prompter. The drama that is playing out on our national stage is ridiculous and maddening. I have never “written my congressman” but this week I did just that (and my senators as well). The idea that Congress and the current Administration feels it is necessary to put me in $300,000 worth of debt to “save the markets” is so beyond mis-guided that it borders on malicious. ($300,000 is $700B divided by all tax-payers; $30,000 is for each citizen, but not everyone pays taxes – that’s another rant).
Fear mongering is one thing, but making decisions out of fear, especially one that includes eleven zeros is just plain stupid. Not sure yet how to characterize spending $7B to get your man elected. And this decision that was made will affect us for 20-30 years where inaction would have affected us for a few years.
I hold to the belief that not much that goes on in D.C. on a day-to-day basis has any affect on my life. Now if they re-instituted the draft and wanted to send a pudgy 33 year old web programmer to Iraq, then, yes, that would affect me.
One thing that does affect me is that the bank (WAMU) that I use for our personal and business accounts just got bought out. But is this cause for alarm? No. When I worked at Frost the company purchased several banks and I helped integrate their data systems. Do I fear about my money? Do I need to go stand in a line for cash? No. We’re fine.
A good statement I heard to put this current economic situation in perspective is: “How much does Enron and MCI/Worldcom’s collapse seven years ago affect you today?” If you worked for them, obviously it affects you, but for everyone else, not much. In 2015, when you mention Lehman’s, Merrill Lynch and WAMU, the same will be true.
Remember Isaiah 41: “Do not fear, for I am with you.” And throw a brick through your T.V.

Thank you!!!! So much drama lately, its ridiculous.
Here, here.
Wow, so much talk about the big bail out.
Looks like the white house staff should have been looking for ” Dollars of mass destruction”.
Just say “NO” to the bailout.
Good stuff Dan-o. The house Republicans are actually making a good show of it. This is a great perspective.
You forgot about the nearing trillion debt spent on the war. Speak the whole truth. Way to go Bush! Great way to leave the White House.

I’m actually alright with spending money fighting a real enemy, rather than a perceived financial nemesis. But, yes, the timing of it all is suspect.
